Apprenticeship spotlight: Brian Tshuma

05 Feb

For us Apprentices are the future of our business. They’re not only our future pipeline of specialists, but also current colleagues developing themselves even further on programmes within the business. We love to shine a spotlight on our wonderful apprentices learning, earning and working on our array of 38 programmes across the Travis Perkins Group. Brain, Tool Hire Fitter & Driver, spoke to us about his experience of the programme:

1. What first attracted you to the programme?

I started this role back in July 2020 after coming from PTS Gloucester. I was made aware that there was a new Apprenticeship which runs alongside my role as a Tool Hire driver. This would also give me the necessary skills to test & service the equipment in the branch. So I was very pleased & excited within my first week to learn of the excellent progression structure here.

2. How have you been supported throughout the programme and beyond?

The support has been fantastic, from my manager to external members of staff. I haven't had any issues in terms of getting assistance, the programme was rolled out so you always have a point of contact. I have attended webinars & also in-house training - the support is always there for us to utilise. I also spend a few dedicated hours in the branch to make sure I complete everything & am aware of any new modules.

3. What’s your favourite thing about being on an Apprenticeship programme with TP?

Apart from the fantastic work ethic within Travis Perkins, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting hands on with some of the equipment, and learning to test and service the tools too. Coming from an office based role, this whole process was all new to me. However there is plenty of room to learn and if you don't get it first time, someone will always point you in the right direction.

4. How has the programme set you up for success?

The programme has given me more skills which I can add to my portfolio. I am now more than just a Delivery Driver; I have basic knowledge of the tools we have and can carry out services here. It's also given me the opportunity to maybe explore what I want to do once I have completed this Apprenticeship. My main aim is to progress & achieve everything within my reach & there’s no better place than Travis Perkins to do this.

5. What has been your proudest moment since working with the Travis Perkins Group?

There are so many moments which I could reel off, but my favourite goes back to the summer of 2020. I had just started & was making my way to another depot. I came across an accident near a police station; a young lady had just been crashed into, everyone was just driving past & her vehicle had spun around so it was facing me. Without even thinking, I blocked the traffic so she could safely come out of her vehicle, called over some assistance & luckily the police came out to the rescue. It just so happened that our Regional Director was driving past at the time and saw the whole thing. News got back to the office & I received a thank you token from the Regional Director himself!

6. Do you have any advice for someone thinking of enrolling on an apprenticeship?

For anyone who may be stuck on what exactly they want to do, I would argue you have to look at the Apprenticeships. There are so many different avenues you could go down if you apply yourself correctly. From Divers, Fitters or an office role? Opportunities are never far away here at Travis Perkins.
