Case study: David Duffy, HGV Driver

15 Nov

David started working at Keyline well before it was known under this name and became a part of the Travis Perkins Group. Keyline are the largest supplier of civils and drainage in the UK and we rely on committed colleagues like David. He has made the most of the career opportunities available to employees of the Travis Perkins Group and has worked his way up to become a fully qualified HGV driver. Here is his story:

“I fancied trying something different, so I gave it a go”

David started working in the yard and when he was offered a place on the Warehouse to Wheels scheme he jumped at the opportunity. The scheme gave him the chance to become a qualified LGV driver and gain experience on days when our full-time drivers were not available. The experience also made him realise that he wanted to make a career out of driving, so as soon as a full-time job became available he submitted his application.

“I like being responsible for planning my day based on the deliveries”

A typical day for David will start with him arriving on site at 6:05. After collecting the keys and doing the checks he’ll decide his route – our drivers are responsible for working out the logistics and this means that every day is different. He’ll try and plan his route so that he can take his break when he is back at the yard. This will mean he can spend some time with his team, which David says is one of the best things about coming into work. Once the work is carried out and the end-of-day check is complete it’s normally 16:00 and David sets off home.

“My six-year-old keeps me on my toes”

When he’s not at work David is kept busy by his young boy. The regular working hours at Keyline means that he can spend time with his family and since he’s a big Everton fan he tried to catch as many matches as he can.

“Keyline paid for all my training to become an HGV driver”

For David, the biggest benefit of working under the Travis Perkins umbrella was being given the opportunity to try something new. He importantly notes that the support he’s received from his manager has made all the difference and it’s one thing that he truly values about working at Keyline. We are always looking to provide career advancement opportunities to colleagues like David who show ambition, and our managers are there to help them along the way.
