Case study: Ian Thompson, HGV Driver Class 2

25 Oct
The Travis Perkins Group has been recognised as one of Britain’s Top Employers for the last nine years. We pride ourselves in selecting the best candidates and creating both a fun and safe space to work in. Like all our drivers, Ian plays an integral part in the day-to-day running of the business. Here’s an insight into his experience with Travis Perkins and some advice for anyone interested in a professional driving career with us:

“I started with some agency work at Travis Perkins, and now I’ve been here 20 years”

Ian has a very inspiring story of how he got to where he is now. He started off his professional career driving a bin lorry and after a year he changed track slightly to become a bus driver. A few years down the line he took a six-month contract with Travis Perkins and he’s now been a member of our team for 20 years.

“My job is great because of the regular hours”

Travis Perkins have strong family values and we encourage all our colleagues to have a good work-life balance. Our regular work hours work mean that all our team members have more time to spend with their family. When he’s not at work, Ian enjoys cycling, watching sport and eating out. And during the time that he is at work, Ian loves chatting with customers.

“When I’m up to date with my work I pitch in and help the yard staff”

There is a buzzing atmosphere in all our branches because our staff work together as a team. They support each other where they can, sharing the success and good times.

“One of the biggest benefits is knowing I have job security”

This is just one of the many benefits that Ian gains from working in the Travis Perkins Group – an organisation that has grown to 2000 outlets nationwide and is expanding still. The financial wellbeing of our colleagues is just as important as any other type of wellbeing, which is why we support them through setting up life insurance and pension schemes.

“Good geographic knowledge will get you a long way here”

For anyone thinking about becoming a driver at Travis Perkins Ian has some great advice. He says you can enjoy a great work-life balance if you’re good with customers and you’re physically active. Where individuals show enthusiasm to be a part of the group, we will put them through the necessary training to grow their career in the direction they want.
