Case study: Jan Bancyzk, Driver/Warehouseman

15 Oct

For Jan Bancyzk, the best thing about working at BSS as a Driver / Warehouse Assistant is the diversity of work and ever-changing nature of the job. Working under the Travis Perkins plc umbrella for nearly three years, he’s enjoyed challenging himself and seeing his skills develop, including gaining his HGV licence through BSS. Here’s his story:

“I arrived in the UK five years ago”

After emigrating to the United Kingdom, Jan worked in several places doing warehouse work before joining BSS Brentford – a leading distributor of pipeline and heating solutions. He’s well and truly settled in the branch now, with three years under his belt and a recent move from a warehouse position to a new dual role where he balances those responsibilities with driver deliveries across London. Through BSS Jan has also achieved the feat of gaining his HGV licence, something which has allowed him to progress and opened up new opportunities. Now a Driver / Warehouse Assistant, Jan drives lorries and vans that weigh from 3.5 tonnes up to 16.5 tonnes.

“The best thing about my job is that every day is different”

The nature of Jan’s dual role means that he works on different tasks every day, with new challenges to overcome and skills to develop. He’s proud of the high level of responsibility placed on him and loves any opportunity to learn new things, something which he says BSS and the Travis Perkins Group helps him to achieve. As an example of this, the opportunity to participate in the Warehouse to Wheels Scheme put Jan on the pathway to becoming a driver at BSS.

“My typical day always starts with a coffee!”

After gaining some caffeinated energy, Jan will check and prepare his truck for the day, pick up any paperwork he needs and get ready to go. With several deliveries scheduled around London on any given day, he must manage his time carefully to ensure no clients are kept waiting. After completing his scheduled deliveries, Jan returns to his office branch, finalises paperwork and chats with his colleagues.

“I’m a big fan of new and emerging technologies”

Outside of work, Jan continues his love of learning by staying on top of new technology trends and is currently enjoying using a 3D printer to create projects to be used around his house. He’s also a fan of board games and spending time with friends.

“New starters joining our business have an opportunity to work with great people”

Jan says that after spending three years working for one of Travis Perkins’ businesses, he firmly believes that anyone joining not only has the chance to work with fantastic colleagues, but also to learn new skills which contribute to their career growth – just as he has done.
