Chantel, Apprentice Mentor

23 Jul

Chantel joined Travis Perkins in 2015 as a Management Apprentice, having graduated from her Programme she has now progressed to become a Regional Apprentice Mentor, provding support and guidance from first hand experience to all apprentices and their managers within her region.

"During sixth form, I worked part-time as a shop supervisor, which led me to consider a career in management. I looked for management apprenticeship opportunities in my local area and found out about the Travis Perkins scheme on a jobs website. My Dad’s a carpenter so I’d heard of Travis Perkins, but I didn’t know anything about the building trade. Despite this, the scheme struck a chord as it sounded very hands-on and clearly offered fantastic opportunities to progress within the business. I decided to apply – and the rest is history!

I joined the Management Apprenticeship scheme in September 2015 after completing my A levels. My first role was based at TP Milton Keynes North. My tasks included putting stock away, serving customers on the Trade Counter and dealing with phone enquiries. As you’d expect, the Apprenticeship scheme was a steep learning curve. Learning how to build relationships with our customers and influence them to keep trading with us is key, you also need good management and prioritisation skills, as the branch gets very busy and there are lots of different jobs to do.

During my programme I was promoted to Assistant Branch Manager which was a massive success for myself, I hadn’t considered that I could progress so quickly, whilst I was still learning new skills through my programme. Since graduating I have moved into a Regional Apprenticeship Mentor position, this has allowed me to take all of my learning both through the Apprenticeship and in branch to our new Apprentices and inspire them to excel.

If you’re thinking of applying to be a Travis Perkins Apprentice, I would say 100% go for it! I’ve never heard of an apprenticeship that lets people excel so quickly. You’ll gain more knowledge than you ever imagined and the opportunities to progress really are endless."
