Mark, Business Development Manager

16 Jan

I’m the Business Development Manager for the North: I look after customers who are on a rebate, key account customers for the independent team, and OEM customers. I’ve also started to work with the electrical wholesaling businesses we deal with.

What I do now is very different to how I started out: I used to teach football in the US for three years, but bizarrely, I got bored! I came home instead, and got a job at B&Q, which I really enjoyed. Then I moved to C&W Berry in Leyland, working on the trade counter and dealing with everybody from site agents and tradespeople to the general public.

I joined F&P Wholesale’s Sales Office in November 2007. I still remember my first day: it was horrifically busy! Despite that, I had a great onboarding process, which I’ve now adopted; without that, I would definitely have left. I worked in the office for fifteen months, then got on the road. I’ve made a point of being honest with my customers: if I say I can do it, then I will. If I can’t, I tell them. This definitely helped me, and after five years I was promoted to RSM before becoming the BDM.

I’d say that the best thing about my job is meeting new people, and I always learn something new from the encounters. I also really enjoy working at F&P Wholesale: it’s run like a family business, and there’s a real openness to working here. There are also so many benefits that come with joining a group like Travis Perkins, letting you save money with Medical Care and incentives like MyPerks- and lots more!
