Here at Travis Perkins we are currently seeking maternity cover for a Data Scientist to take responsibility for analysing and understanding specific business requirements; building, delivering and evaluating predictive and prescriptive models intended to help improve business decision making, ultimately leading to increased customer engagement and top/bottom line growth.

The position is available on a 15 month fixed-term contract but with strong possibility this will lead to a permanent position as the team expands.

The role we're recruiting for

As a Travis Perkins Data Scientist you will be responsible for using the latest cloud and data technologies to conceive and deploy analytical solutions across all areas of the business. Proposing analytics strategies that help expand the thinking of everyone around you, you’ll be working as both a data detective and data explorer, challenging the status quo and helping to create a more data-driven culture.

You will constantly seek to improve the integrity, veracity and diversity of available data to ensure best possible resource for business analytics. Help ideate and define process improvement opportunities and act as a point of technical expertise on engagements, supporting senior team members in building strong, strategic relationships across the business.

The Data Scientist will also proactively identify opportunities to deliver value-laden innovative solutions. Actively promoting the development of Business Intelligence infrastructure to reduce the demand on analytical resources, optimise analytical products and increase the effectiveness of Group Data operational assets.

It would be great if you had…

  • A degree in a quantitative discipline, e.g. Physics/mathematics/computer science

  • Proven experience in applying predictive data analysis techniques to real-world business problems, i.e. some experience working as a data scientist/analyst

  • Understanding of predictive modelling, machine-learning, clustering and classification techniques

  • Strong statistical skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with high attention to detail and accuracy

  • SQL scripting, Excel and Python/R/SAS skills (We currently use SAS Enterprise Guide and Enterprise Miner modules)

  • Knowledge of development environments, including shell scripting, version control etc

  • Understanding of complex data structures

  • Experience working with Google Cloud Platform solutions

What can this role offer you?

  • Flexibility in location once established in role

  • The potential to play an integral part in a huge digital transformation programme towards becoming a data-driven and customer centric organisation

  • To work across and influence a large company with a diverse set of businesses, customers and stakeholders and thus countless unique problems and opportunity

  • Massive opportunity to demonstrate the value of data through delivering results which make a difference to customers and therefore drive improvement in sales and margin across our business

  • The chance to write your own story and shape your role within the organisation
