Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Service Lead within our Business Services function at Ryehill House Northampton. 

Providing expert technical and organisational skills within a team; leading and driving the delivery of software development; maintenance, optimisation and support of software services including out-of-hours; help to build relationships with the business, ensuring that expectations are met and results delivered; adoption of best practices in planning, standards and methodology

Main responsibilities of the role: 

  • Facilitate 24/7 operational support and assurance of the service(s) across the Service team, defining, achieving and reporting the agreed SLAs and OLAs.  Working with third party suppliers where necessary.  
  • Providing Subject Matter Expert guidance and knowledge to the assigned BuS pillar; give  technical leadership to an end-to-end or project team, engendering an environment where talent is encouraged and developed and managing the technical career development of the members of that team.
  • Encourage the mentoring of junior members of the team to help build their skills and confidence. 
  • Provide technical guidance and ensure that quality, standards and best practice are adhered to.
  • Proactively develop skills as required to support changes in technology and for personal development.
  • Manage the change, enhancements and support of the service configuration, based on detailed business process models by working closely with business process owners, architects and business analysts to ensure the system can support the approved models.
  • Lead the appropriate development methodology, creating plans and other project management artefacts as appropriate, be enthusiastic and communicate clearly to all stakeholders, helping to build relationships both internally and with external 3rd party providers as required.
  • Oversee the analysis, testing and promoting of any appropriate changes through the system landscape, using prototyping as appropriate. Ensuring the capturing of relevant training material and knowledge articles, for wider use across the business and IT support functions.
  • Support the Service platform roadmap, in line with business and customer needs, development requirements and the target architecture and principles. Capture and help develop roadmap recommendations from user feedback and for optimisation of the services. Assist with vendor selections and future features. 
  • Ensure the platform stays in support and ensure upgrades are planned and fully tested. 
  • Liaise with other platform teams to coordinate configurations and deployments as part of larger solution development activities.
  • Deputise for the Service Lead and Service Owner when required.
  • Oversee the implementation of high quality software services and conduct assurance reviews throughout software development lifecycle. Ensure the simplest possible solutions to business problems with highly testable and maintainable code are developed. Work using TDD and BDD (where appropriate) to design the software and lower both code complexity and nesting depths. Support the aims of Technical Design with respect to software quality and design patterns and automation of delivery pipelines.
  • Monitor and tune service health end to end through optimisation, with a view to proactively avoiding service incidents. Manage problems to remove service affecting incidents.
  • Continuous improvement - Act on the development metrics and retrospective feedback to maintain and continuously improve the performance of the team. Be prepared to offer constructive feedback to team members and act on feedback from others.

It would be great if you had…

  • Demonstrable expert experience of application support, software development and/or platform configuration knowledge and skills
  • Object Oriented programming / Design (OOP OOD) and / or Procedural programming and / or SQL
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools. M3,  JDA WMS 9.1, Nice Labels, Jasper Reports,  Java, J2EE, .NET, Universe Basic, MySQL, Mongo DB, Spring MVC, Git, Junit, Cucumber-JVM, REST / JSON web Services, BDD, XP Practices
  • A sound understanding of infrastructure as code
