BSS is a leading distributor of heating, pipeline, process and mechanical services equipment to the Building Services and Industrial sectors. Established over 100 years ago, we became a part of Travis Perkins plc in 2010 and now have 60 BSS branches nationwide, along with Distribution Centres based in Lutterworth and Coventry. We now have a unique opportunity for an experienced Transport Manager to own all fleet and distribution activity out of our two Distribution Centres, managing our FORS Gold certificated fleet.
Reporting to our Supply Chain Director, the successful candidate would lead a team of c.30 HGV Drivers and 2 Transport Co-Ordinators, all responsible for ensuring stock is moved efficiently and safely between DC and our branches.
Our Coventry (Cross Point) transport operation runs during the day, primarily delivering large tube to our branches during daytime hours. Our Lutterworth (Magna Park) transport operation runs during the night, with drivers being responsible for lone night time branch deliveries. Because of the nature of our 24/5 operation, it’s important that the Transport Manager is contactable during both day and night along with being flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of our business, travelling to branches as and when required.
Our ‘order by 5, in-branch collect at opening time next day’ service offering requires attention to detail on a fleet operation spanning 24/5 - that calls for regular time with drivers, shift briefs/de-briefs, interface with service agents/partners, and ongoing contact with the National Distribution Centres.
The successful candidate would have managed similar sized Transport operations previously, be Health & Safety focussed, able to develop strong working relationships with key business stakeholders and have a strong understanding of vehicle/transport compliance. You’ll be a true leader, capable of developing and motivating your direct reports.
Events of the last three months have accelerated our plans to develop a ‘click and collect’ customer offering, potentially operating out of Magna Park in partnership with third-party operators. This role will play a key part in designing and developing this service offer, therefore, a sound understanding of the current market for pallet and parcel operations, relevant systems and commercial arrangements, would be a valuable asset.
The role is based at our Distribution Centre at Magna Park, Lutterworth; due to the hands-on and round-the-clock nature of the role we are looking for candidates within easy commute distance of the site.
