An HGV driver’s insight into working at BSS

Jason was already an experienced HGV driver with over 19 years’ experience before coming to work for BSS. In the last few years whilst working within the Travis Perkins Group, he has enjoyed the many benefits of being part of our family and the career progression we offer. Read Jason’s insight into life at BSS:

A supportive team and network

For Jason, being given the freedom and responsibility to do his job is one of the many things he enjoys about working for BSS. Within our Group, our people are encouraged to use their initiative and oversee their own duties, eliminating the need to be micromanaged, and fostering a supportive atmosphere.

He says he appreciates the social aspect of working within a friendly team at his branch. Team building events and taking time to recognise colleagues for their hard work really helps to motivate our colleagues.

He also enjoys interacting with and chatting to customers when offloading at sites. This is music to our ears, as providing quality service for our customers is one of our key cornerstones.

Our focus on safety and staff wellbeing

Jason says that amongst the many benefits of working within the Group, our focus on safety and staff wellbeing is a key one for him.

The safety and wellbeing of our colleagues is the Group’s number one priority, and so a recent initiative to help proactively manage wellbeing in the workplace involved the recruitment of two Stay Well Ambassadors. These roles were created after the Group wanted to enhance support for colleagues’ welfare and to better understand what we do well and where we need to improve and evolve.

A typical day as a driver at BSS

We provide resources for many high-profile and fast-paced projects across the UK, but a normal day for Jason involves making deliveries within many time-restricted slots in London, which are specific and need to be met.

‘After arriving at the branch and sorting the notes for the day ahead, I check the load is safe and ensure I have everything I need for the orders.’

Once this is complete, he’ll set off for his deliveries and aim to keep to the time slots. From Jason’s experience, the offloading process will differ between each site, and this will define how the rest of the day pans out for him. He therefore must be prepared for any obstacles from the outset, whilst maintaining his can-do attitude.

‘A challenging but rewarding job’

Often, jobs in driving involve unsociable hours and few benefits. With us, that’s just not true. At Travis Perkins we have strong family values and encourage all our colleagues to have a good work-life balance. Across our Group, we therefore offer all our drivers full time, permanent working hours, with no late nights or overnight stays. This means that all our team members have more time to spend with their families or enjoying personal time.

Jason says that being an HGV driver is a challenging but rewarding job. He admits that driving in London to complete deliveries doesn’t come without its tests but come the end of the day, it’s a very rewarding feeling knowing your customers have everything they need. It’s this attitude towards work that makes Jason such a great fit for BSS!
