Across our businesses, marketing encompasses the more traditional creative design and art work, customer and market insights, CRM and direct marketing, and brand development. From a digital perspective it includes product development, website merchandising and digital marketing.

With responsibility for bringing our own brand and known brand product ranges to life in the eyes of our customers, it is these teams that make sure our promotions, partnerships, advertising, point of sale, PR, digital and social media campaigns stand out and are successful. What types of roles exist within marketing?

Some of our jobs in marketing include:

Marketing Assistant

When starting as a marketing assistant at Travis Perkins, a degree is not necessarily a requirement. Instead, we opt for people with great personalities that will fit our culture and in turn provide them with the skills and development to grow with us. 

Marketing Executive

When Marketing Assistants progress to Marketing Executives, they take on more responsibility regarding strategies that help build long-term relationships with our customers, covering a wide range of channels. Therefore, at this level, we’d expect a degree, not necessarily in marketing, or 2 to 3 years relevant experience. 

Marketing Manager

We’re keen to promote from within, and with exceptional knowledge, skills and experience, career progression can lead to management. Our marketing managers lead small teams and set the framework, strategies and KPIs that enable success, so we’re looking for significant experience at this level. 

What types of roles exist within digital?

A few examples of digital roles in our teams include:

Digital product owners

Within this team we have digital product owners who are responsible for the development of our digital channels, including customer apps. They develop exciting product roadmaps, and work with engineers, developers and designers to build it out.

Website merchandiser

The website merchandising team build out customer journeys within digital channels, helping to drive success with our ecommerce activities. Roles in this team include Senior Merchandiser, Junior Merchandiser, and data roles.

Digital marketers

Another core area is our digital marketing team who engage customers and drive revenue through online channels such as Pay Per Click (PPC), Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and content marketing.

What does career progression look like in marketing and digital?

Whilst we sometimes recruit colleagues with experience in these areas, the majority of our recruitment is entry level as we’re keen to develop and grow teams internally. 

Matt Aitken, for example, was recently promoted to Head of Marketing at Travis Perkins, having worked in digital for the last 3 years. We asked him why he loves working at Travis Perkins and he told us: “I’ve found that if you’ve got good ideas, the business wants to hear them and will do what they can to implement them. I’ve been here 15 years and held 14 different positions across the Group in that time. I started out as a Marketing Assistant and with continued support from the business, my career has developed into what it is now.”

To aid career progression, we also provide access and memberships to organisations such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing to gain qualifications, plus we have advanced apprenticeships for colleagues to complete alongside their work.
