In 2021 David became a father for the first time, which encouraged him to re-evaluate his family life and the kind of role model he wanted to be. This culminated in a change of work/life balance; one that would suit his young family.
Since June 2022, David has been part-time in his role as Branch Manager and his ‘new role as house-husband’ (his words!). He told us about what motivated the change, and how we supported him:
What does the role of a branch manager involve on a day-to-day basis?
“It’s predominantly all about people; whether that be our colleagues, customers or suppliers. It’s making sure that everyone within the branch is aware of what they are doing, working safely and offering a winning service.
I’m fortunate to have a great team and Assistant Branch Manager who make sure the branch stays open and offers a first-class service. Plus, it’s great to help people develop their careers, whether that be to assist them in their role now, or help get them into their next role to achieve their ambitions.”
What made you decide to become part-time?
“I had been working as a full-time Branch Manager, but after having a child last year, as a family, we decided that my partner would return full-time and I would look for a part-time role. Initially, after making this decision, I thought that it wouldn’t be possible to remain as Branch Manager and that I would have to either leave or perhaps move to another role within Travis Perkins.
However, I spoke to my Regional Director and he was both supportive of the new changes in my life, and grateful that I didn’t want to leave the business. He then spoke with the relevant people and between us, we established what the new set-up would look like. Everyone, including HR and senior Directors, was then very supportive in making it happen.”
Creating an opportunity for job sharing
With David going part-time, it has created the opportunity for two Assistant Branch Managers to share in running the branch and team.
“It will definitely take time to adjust, having worked full-time for 19 years. However, I'm lucky to work with extraordinary colleagues, who are excited to see how they can support, develop and review a new way of working.
“Thank you to Travis Perkins for even considering this, let alone delivering on it. You’ve given me time with my son whilst he is young and I can still do the job I'm passionate about.”
Why and what has kept you working with Travis Perkins?
“Recently it’s been the ability to work flexibly; it has meant that my children get some quality time with me. Plus, while I do most (‘some’, according to my partner) of the housework, it means when she gets home from work she can also have quality time with the children instead of us both rushing around trying to keep on top of the kids and housework.
It has been a massive team effort to make this happen for me. I’ve had support from above me to make it happen, and support from my team to keep it going every day. This is really the case of living our values, as we truly are better together.”
