Career Story: The Power of The Network

The Power of the Network: Insights from Jordan Berry

Jordan Berry is a Business Development Manager and a 10-year veteran of the Travis Perkins Group. Having joined the business as part of the 2015 Management Development Programme (MDP) cohort, Jordan has successfully navigated his career within the group, using his foundational training to drive business growth.

Jordan shares how the programme provides a total view of the business, the unparalleled power of networking, and why cross-brand exposure is a game-changer.

A 360-Degree View of the Business

For Jordan, entering the Management Trainee Programme with zero industry knowledge wasn't a hurdle—it was an opportunity. The programme's structure allowed him to immerse himself in every facet of the operation.

"The most beneficial part was gaining experience across a range of departments, including warehouse, transport, admin, sales, and other CCF depots. This exposure helped me understand the business and identify the career path best suited to my skills and interests."

The Ultimate Takeaway: The Art of Networking

When looking back at the single most significant lesson that has stuck with him over his decade-long career at TP, Jordan sums it up in one word: Networking.

He emphasizes that building a career isn't just about what you know, but who you connect with.

"Take advantage of being new, ask questions, keep an open mind, and push yourself. A two-minute conversation with a colleague, supplier, or customer can go a long way to forming a long-lasting relationship."

Bridging the Brands

Reflecting on how the programme can continue to evolve and deliver top-tier leaders, Jordan advocates for a return to immersive, cross-company experiences.

  • Cross-Branding Exposure: Jordan highly recommends a two-week cross-branding rotation. During his training, he spent a week at Travis Perkins and a week at City Plumbing.

  • The Big Picture: These experiences helped him understand how the group as a whole can work together effectively, while providing an incredible opportunity to network internally.

Shaping the Future: You Get What You Put In

For anyone considering joining the Manager Trainee Programme, Jordan’s advice is both motivating and clear: you are the driver of your own success.

"You get out of the programme what you put into it. Take ownership of your development, embrace every opportunity, and push yourself to learn. Several members of CCF's Senior Leadership Team started on the Management Development Programme—there’s no reason you couldn’t be next."

Jordan concludes that the TP Group and CCF offer a fantastic environment for growth, and an apprenticeship or MDP remains the ultimate gateway into the industry. His final piece of advice?

"Take advantage of the opportunity and most importantly, don't be a stranger—network!"
