Case study: Derek Staines, HGV Driver

15 Nov

Derek was driving professionally for 14 years before he began working for a third-party company which delivered goods for the Travis Perkins Group. At Travis Perkins, we appreciate people who want to work for our brand - and help us maintain our 10-year standing as one of the UK’s Top Employers - so we offered Derek a job. That’s how he became a member of our team and since then his commitment to the company has helped us grow from strength to strength. Here’s his story:

“I wanted to stay with the Travis Perkins brand”

Derek began his professional career driving airport ground vehicles and over time progressed into a role where he was responsible for moving the aircrafts. After 14 years he then relocated to Devon and began delivering goods for retail companies, including one from the Travis Perkins Group. This was his first experience working with our company and since it was such a positive one, he was more than happy to accept our job offer. We value loyal colleagues like Derek and are continually looking for new members to join our team.

“I enjoy interacting with people and going the extra mile”

Driver jobs at Travis Perkins are very sociable and like all our staff, Derek values the daily customer interaction. Derek spends the morning deciding on the route he’ll drive and then he sets off, normally making around 30 drops in the day. This keeps him busy, but never too busy to have a chat with customers whilst the delivery is being unloaded and the paperwork is filled out. When he’s back at the yard he gets to catch up with his colleagues as he helps them with the stock replenishment and serving customers.

It’s colleagues like Derek that allow us to continue providing a first-class service to our customers and without that we would not have grown to become the group that we are now.

“We’re a small team but it’s a place of excellent teamwork”

While we may have grown to 28,000 colleagues in the last 31 years, we’ve maintained a strong community feel. The small teams, like the one Derek is a part of, create a great sense of camaraderie at our branches and for most of our colleagues it the best thing about working at Travis Perkins.

“Working for the Travis Perkins Group means I get great benefits”

With over 20 companies in the Group, we can offer great bonuses to Derek and our other colleagues, like our MyPerks scheme, life assurance, profit share and company discount.
