Case study: Mark Harrington, Kitchen Designer

Mark started his journey with us in 2018 at Benchmarx. As a member of Travis Perkins plc, Benchmarx is a part of a leading organisation in the builders’ merchant markets in the UK. “I knew when I walked into Benchmarx for my interview that it was the place I wanted to build my new career”

Mark hasn’t always been a Kitchen Designer. He started his career as a Space Planner where he was responsible for planning office relocations for a major insurance firm. His design career took off from here and he moved into the kitchen and bathroom industry where he gained 22 years’ experience before an opportunity came up at Benchmarx. He says there was no doubt in his mind when he stepped into Benchmarx and met the team that it was the right working environment for him.

This is one of the many things that Mark loves about his job at Benchmarx. He’s confident when our customers come to us they are getting an exceptional, all-round package, including the design, price and most importantly the service. And this belief in our company is just one of the reasons that Mark has excelled at Benchmarx. In fact, just within six months of working with us and building strong relationships with our customers, he was given the opportunity to progress to an Assistant Branch Manager.

“On a typical day, I’ll visit customer’s homes then return to the branch and plan the designs”

Mark will usually start his say by logging onto the system to check through his emails. He’ll respond to customer emails about making changes to plans and then confirm his appointments for the day. With his admin duties out the way Mark will set off to make site visits at customer’s home and then head back to his branch to start working on the plans. And when he has a spare minute he’ll support his colleagues with counter sales, taking phone calls and lending a hand in the warehouse.

“Outside of work I spend most of my time occupying my 4-year-old”

When Mark isn’t helping our customers design their dream kitchen he keeps himself busy with his 4-year-old son. This will normally involve watching Peppa Pig or listening to "Let it go" from Frozen. And, when the time allows, you can find him fixing motorbikes or even getting in a spot of fishing.

Mark has experienced first-hand the support we give our colleagues to take on more responsibility. He also credits his “fantastic team” who have been instrumental in helping throughout his journey. They all enjoy a great work-life balance and this helps them come into work every day feeling refreshed and engaged.

“You must show a willingness to learn and develop your skills”
