How Toolstation empowers retail colleagues’ development through Apprenticeships

At Toolstation, we're not just about giving you top-notch tools and supplies. Our commitment extends to our colleagues and supporting them in growing and developing their careers.

We're excited to share the inspiring stories of three incredible colleagues who've not just tackled the ins and outs of the retail world but have truly excelled, thanks to our Apprenticeship programmes

Join us as we celebrate the remarkable journeys of Jayne, Sam, and Will, each a testament to the opportunities and support Toolstation offers to those willing to reach new heights in their careers.

Jayne - Leading with passion

Jayne's incredible journey from Store Supervisor role to Store Manager at Liverpool Edge Lane demonstrates her passion for levelling up both personally and professionally.

Through Apprenticeships like the Retail Development Plan and Level 4 Retail Manager, Jayne is a great example of how embracing opportunities and pushing personal boundaries can lead to success.

Apprenticeship qualifications:

  • Retail Development Plan (RDP) 2019-2020
  • Level 4 Retail Manager (LEAP) 2021-2022
  • Currently working towards HR Level 3 Support (MBKB)

"I had been in a Supervisor position for around a year and felt sure I could manage my own team and run a great store. When an opportunity came up to become a manager of a brand new store, I applied and was successful.

The opportunity to challenge and develop myself combined with supportive and engaging people around me has kept me with Toolstation.

My advice for someone thinking of joining the business is to take every opportunity as it comes – we're a growing business, so be prepared for some changes, but also get ready to play a part in making those changes happen.

I find Toolstation to be a really down-to-earth place to work. Everyone has been so supportive, which has been especially important while I’ve been working towards my apprenticeship."

Sam - Pioneering leadership at 20

Starting as a Supervisor at 18, Sam rapidly climbed the ranks, becoming a Store Manager at just 20. His determination and the completion of the Take the Lead Programme underscore the great opportunities we provide at Toolstation to support development and progression.

Apprenticeship qualification:

  • Take the Lead Programme (internal Toolstation development course)

“After settling into my original role as Store Supervisor, I set my sights on career development and progression with the company. Making the move into branch management was a clear goal of mine, and due to the support of my manager and regional manager, I am now a Store Manager at the age of 20.

I love the flexibility, balance, and opportunity the role has supplied me with. I’m incredibly grateful to have been given the chance to show my abilities in retail management.

Toolstation and Travis Perkins plc as a whole have an array of benefits and opportunities that I’ve been able to take advantage of to boost my career far further than I believed was possible at 20 years old.”

Will - Building success in one of our branches

Will's rich background and diverse experience across different industries paved the way for his role as a Store Manager, thanks to our Take the Lead course.

His journey underscores the versatility and adaptability that we value in our colleagues at Toolstation.

Apprenticeship qualification:

  • Take the Lead Programme (internal Toolstation development course)

“I’ve always wanted to progress to Manager since starting as a Supervisor.

Toolstation is a growing company that brings great opportunities to further your career. There are also great opportunities to complete courses to help build knowledge and skills.

A recent experience in the Fakenham store, while being short-staffed, demonstrated the collective power ingrained in our collaborative efforts. The belief that we are better together wasn’t just a slogan but a lived reality."
