Travis Perkins. You’re probably thinking bricks, blocks, timber and tools. I certainly did before I started working here, but there is so much more to this business than that. Industry leading apprenticeship schemes, career development opportunities, bonus earning potential, retail discounts, gym memberships - the list goes on! My name is Charlotte, and I’m a Yard Apprentice here at Travis Perkins. Let me tell you more about us, and why you should consider a career with our brilliant business.
Let’s be honest, no one grows up with a burning passion to work in a builders merchant (well, I know I certainly didn't!). I didn't really know what to expect, but since joining, I have been supported by an amazing team that have an unrivalled passion to provide an excellent level of service to our local customers (typically builders and tradespeople) and I’m now on track to pass my apprenticeship and I’m already looking at options to enrol on a management apprenticeship next to further my career.
Your primary role will be to work in the yard outside, this is where all of our materials are stored. I love working in the yard in the summer, soaking up the rays whilst helping out our customers, but the winter can be slightly chilly! As a Yard Apprentice, you will be responsible for maintaining our high standards, making sure the yard is kept tidy, clean, and most importantly - safe. You will build great relationships with our customers, most of whom you’ll see regularly and be on first name terms with. You will help our customers find materials, provide advice and help them load their vehicles. I knew nothing (and I mean, nothing!) about building materials before starting here, but that really isn't an issue.
As part of this 12 month apprenticeship programme, you will gain a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service which is the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes. All of your learning is “on the job”, Travis Perkins values a work-life balance and there is no need for you to complete any of your work “out of hours”. The course consists of a number of modules and you will have a dedicated coach that will guide you throughout, as well as being supported by your line manager (and in my case a really supportive team who I consider to be my friends!)
Not only will you gain a qualification off the back of this programme, but Travis Perkins have a tonne of benefits too:
You will be paid a competitive annual salary
22 days annual leave, pension, bonus and staff discount (Including 20% off at Toolstation!)
Discounts at various retailers including Currys, Tesco, Boots, John Lewis + many more!
Upon completion of the programme, you will be awarded a “Level 2 Apprenticeship in Customer Service” qualification, and you will remain a valued member of the team (Oh, and your pay will go up too!)
Travis Perkins is part of the Travis Perkins plc group. Our group has a number of different businesses under it’s umbrella meaning plenty of opportunity for internal movement and progression, it’s strongly encouraged here
Sociable working hours, we’re looking for someone to work Mon to Fri 0730-1700 but can offer flexibility for the right person, and we don’t work Bank Holidays either
I hope that you’re as excited about this role as I am, and that my first-hand experience has provided a small insight into what we do here. Apply today, you won’t regret it!
We’re driving to become a truly inclusive employer. We want everyone to be at their best and it’s our ambition that everyone within our Group feels safe, welcome and confident to be their authentic selves.
You be you, it makes us, us.
