LEAP with Travis Perkins plc

Our “Learn and Earn” Apprenticeship Programmes (LEAP) will allow you to realise your full potential.

This is your opportunity to embark upon a rewarding career within a group that has 20+ industry leading businesses to its name. Whatever your passion, we have the training tools and expertise to develop your required skill set.

Our Apprenticeships are designed to support individuals with no prior knowledge of our industry or our business and give them the skills they need to become a really valued colleague. And it doesn’t have to end here, as we have a suite of Apprenticeship programmes from Level 2 to Level 7 that can support you to continue to develop your career with us, all the way up to the Boardroom.

Whichever Travis Perkins apprenticeship you choose you’ll need to be motivated, ambitious and up for working in a fast-paced, diverse environment. We’ll give you plenty of support but you’ll also get ownership, responsibility for real work and the freedom to figure out how to do things your way.

Our current programmes are delivered in house by our experienced Apprenticeships team, who will ensure you are able to reach your full potential with us. You’ll be supported from day one by an Apprentice Coach who will deliver your training, provide feedback on your progress and help you to define your future career plans.

All of our programmes give you the opportunity to drive performance across your business area and deliver projects that will positively impact what we do. Our supportive 'family feel' encourages you to challenge the way we do things, take risks and learn what works for you.

Whether you’re looking for a change in career, or you’re just starting out in your career, discover the different apprenticeship programmes we offer below and how they can support you:

Merchanting
Our best branch colleagues are able to effectively assist customers when they purchase products and services. This requires a good understanding of the stock being sold, the variety of ways customers can shop and the ability to process payments. Above all, you must be passionate about delivering a quality service that always aims to exceed customers’ expectations.

Each of our Merchant brands offers a Level 2 Trade Supplier Apprenticeship that will help you build the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to be a really valued member of the branch team. Over this 12 month programme, you will understand more about the products and services we offer whilst building your confidence, communication and relationship building skills.
Customer Services - Retail
Within our Retail Brands, Wickes and Toolstation, our colleagues need to offer the best possible service and have the ability to support our customers whether they are buying products in store, online or over the phone. This requires a good understanding of customer needs, the variety of ways customers can shop and the ability to process payments.

To support this knowledge, we offer a Level 2 Retail Apprenticeship that will fast track your understanding of our business, our processes and our customer base. Over this 12 month programme you’ll learn more about order fulfilment, stay safe initiatives and the products we sell whilst thinking about the role you have to play within your store and your future career development.
Administration
Administrators work across all areas of our business and are incredibly valued for their ability to increase the efficiency of their business area. They are responsible for developing, implementing and improving administrative processes. To help develop your skill set, our Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship will build your knowledge of our processes and procedures as well as developing your skill set in areas such as project management, change management and problem solving.
Tool Hire
Our best Tool Hire colleagues are key to the success of our Hire Business. As the main point of contact for our valued customers, they require an in-depth technical product knowledge about the operation of the equipment, health and safety considerations and can advise customers on the right tools and equipment for the job in hand.

Joining the Tool Hire side of our business, you’ll have the opportunity to join a Level 2 Hire Controller Apprenticeship. This 12 month programme will provide you with knowledge around the safety and maintenance of our hire products and the use of our systems whilst building up your sales and customer service skills.
Kitchen/Bathroom Design
Making a new kitchen or bathroom purchase is a huge decision for our customers and we rely on our talented Kitchen and Bathroom Designers to make them feel like they are in safe hands. Our designers will bring their visions to life, talking them through the entire process and ensuring they have confidence in their purchasing decisions.

Joining us within a Kitchen or Bathroom Design Consultant position, you will have the opportunity to embark on a Level 3 Fitted Furniture Design Apprenticeship. This 15 month programme will provide the in-depth product knowledge, understanding of our customer needs and inspirational design skills that set our colleagues apart from our competitors. You’ll receive full training on Computer Aided Design (CAD) Technology, allowing you to bring your customers’ visions to life.
Sales
Our best Sales colleagues understand our products and services in detail. An expert at analysing customer needs, sales colleagues create great outcomes for our customers by tailoring their approach. They will develop customer relationships, establishing rapport and building trust through demonstration of detailed product knowledge, competitor knowledge and an understanding of the market in which they operate. Above all, they will ensure a positive experience for all of their customers.

We offer a Level 4 Sales Expert Apprenticeship for our colleagues working within Sales positions. This 18 month programme builds the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to allow you to offer a great service that will keep our customers returning.
Buying/Merchandising
Centred around our customer strategy, we rely on our Commercial teams to find and work with the best suppliers at the best prices. Our best Commercial Colleagues have a strong understanding of our market, our customer needs and our competition. Most importantly, they are able to build and maintain fantastic relationships with our branches, providing them with the service that they need to win.

If you join us within a buying or merchandising role, you have the opportunity to join a Level 4 Buying/Merchandising Assistant Apprenticeship. This 18 month programme will support you to develop the required knowledge and skill set to become a really valued member of the Commercial Team.
Management and Leadership
The success of our business relies on great leadership - people who can motivate and develop high performing teams with the confidence to bring their own ideas forward and adopt a continuous improvement mindset. They need to be able to set, and deliver strategy whilst inspiring the people around them to come with them on that journey.

Join us within a management or leadership role and you will have the opportunity to enrol onto a Level 3 or a Level 5 Management Apprenticeship. In more senior roles, we also offer Degree Level Apprenticeships in partnership with the Open University. These programmes will support you to develop your leadership style and to gain vital skills that will allow you to lead high performing teams within the Travis Perkins Group.

Your questions answered...

Who can be an apprentice?
Absolutely anyone can be an Apprentice. There is no restriction on age, education or background. The only requirement is that the Apprenticeship Programme will allow you to build a new skill set.
What support will I receive whilst on my programme?
Your Line Manager is on hand on a daily basis to coach and support you with any challenges you face, as well as giving you the opportunity to put your skills into practice. You will also be assigned an Apprentice Mentor who will visit you once every 3 months as a minimum.

Your mentor will assess your work and make sure you’re on the right track. They are also at the end of the phone if you need any additional support outside of those visits. Our wider Apprenticeship team are also on hand. Our Facilitators will deliver the workshop element of your programme and we have an admin team who can support any challenges you are having on a day to day basis.Your Line Manager is on hand on a daily basis to coach and support you with any challenges you face, as well as giving you the opportunity to put your skills into practice. How will I be assessed?
Throughout your programme you will be pulling together a portfolio of evidence that shows all the things you’ve learnt whilst on your Apprenticeship Programme. At the very end of your programme, an external provider will come into your place of work, have a conversation with you about your Programme and look through your portfolio.
Do the apprenticeships offer genuine qualifications?
Absolutely. All of our Apprenticeship programmes offer nationally recognised qualifications where you will be awarded either a pass, merit or distinction grade. Our Management Programmes even come with extra option to study towards a diploma with the Chartered Management Institute. This reflects the quality of the training you will receive throughout your apprenticeship.
How do I apply?
Within the Travis Perkins Group, we do all of our recruitment online. See below for a list of our current apprentice vacancies and click on the links to submit your application.
What happens next?
Once you’ve submitted your application, one of our team will be in touch within four weeks to let you know whether you will be progressed to the next stage. Depending on the Apprenticeship Programme you’ve applied for, the next stage can vary.

You will be invited either to a telephone interview, or into branch for a face to face interview. Following this, there will be a second stage interview where you are likely to meet some additional members of the branch team, and have a full tour of the site. One of the team will be in touch shortly after this to let you know whether or not you have been successful.
What can I expect at interview?
Friendly people and lots of questions! We’ll want to know all about your background and whether your skills match the role you are applying for. Of course, interviews work two ways so come prepared to ask any questions you may have about the scheme and the Travis Perkins group. For more advice on interviews, have a look at our Top Tips
What happens at the end of my apprenticeship?
All of our Apprentices are brought into the business on a permanent contract. At the end of your programme, your progress will be reviewed and you will be moved into a position that suits your current skill set and provides you with an environment that will continue to challenge and develop you.
How much will the Apprenticeship Cost?
Our courses will cost you nothing but applying time and effort to your own development, all costs are covered by the Travis Perkins Group, including any travel and accommodation costs that might be necessary.
