Job Description

The role of Head Of Trading/Head Of Category - Timber is an exciting opportunity to help shape and lead the Travis Perkins strategy for the development of our Timber proposition.  As an experienced Head Of Trading, working as part of our established commercial team, you will be fully responsible for the P&L of product categories including the CE score of the customer, sales and profitability as well as the cost of goods. You will lead the Timber category and work with a matrix of supporting functions from Marketing, Pricing and Multichannel, as well as being fully engaged in helping our branch managers win in their local market. 


Principle Accountabilities:


  • Set a clear and customer focused strategy to deliver growth in customer sales, profit and market share in line with the 3 year plan.


  • Accountable for the delivery of customer and category plans that are fully aligned to the needs of the customer, informed by internal and external insight to provide the best overall customer proposition.


  • Lead, develop and manage the Timber category team - through coaching and line management of direct reports, ensuring that they are fully aligned behind our branch and sales teams.


  • Accountable for representing Timber products across the business and collaborating effectively with internal stakeholders to execute across all channels including: branch and sales teams; promotional and customer marketing; category pricing; optimised range and space.


  • Deliver margin / cost of goods improvements through supplier trading terms negotiations, group synergy projects, common and direct sourcing programmes and local buying opportunities.


  • Accountable for ranging that offers the optimum balance of quality, regionality and value and is designed to capture the optimum share of spend of the relevant customer segment, growing sales profitably.


  • Responsible for building a category budget for sales and margin, monitoring trading performance and developing and executing action plans as required to achieve the plan.


  • Build profitable partnerships with key suppliers, underpinned by focused business plans to develop a market leading position.


  • Deliver product availability targets in conjunction with the cost effective management of slow, dead or exit stock from the business.

What we are looking for in you?


Experience


  • Proven track record in a customer focused business

  • Minimum of 5 years experience within the timber industry

  • Commercial management experience - category management, sales development or branch management 

  • Developing & executing a category strategy

  • Leadership experience

  • Worked in matrix structure 

  • B2B experience


Skills


  • Leadership & team management and being able to influence across teams

  • Supplier management and strong negotiation skills

  • Project delivery through cross functional teams

  • Strong analytical capability combined with excellent commercial acumen
