Head of Engineering 
Location - Northampton

We have an exciting new role to join our newly formed  IT department within the Plumbing and Heating division. This role will be based in the newly refurbished offices located at Harvey Reeves Road Northampton. 

The Role
Manage and lead Plumbing and Heating engineering function, set up to transform the company’s engineering capability, flexing up to around 30+ Developers, Testers, Architects & DevOps staff, both permanent and via the management of external agencies/consultants.

Principe Accountabilities
  • Capture and articulate our development systems and programs, aligning to the company philosophy and practices, but also bringing in your own and industry best practices focusing on modern engineering concepts, practices and processes 
  • Serve as the technology lead shaping and defining all digital solutions across the business
  • Collaborate with Enterprise and Digital Architects to ensure the technology stack of the digital platform is engineered for high performance while enabling accelerated delivery
  • Management of 3rd party delivery teams and consultancies to drive the Plumbing and Heating digital transformation roadmap
  • Engage with business stakeholders to ensure the required support and staffing is made available for successful deployment of solutions to meet the delivery timelines
  • Establish key performance indicators and operating metrics to ensure software engineers deliver an optimal platform and services for the digital commerce and marketing businesses
  • Improve and optimise the software development lifecycle processes to promote a continuous delivery culture enabling accelerated delivery cycles and improved ROI
  • Work with third party service providers and vendors to ensure the right resources, tools and platform capabilities are available to teams

What you will have 

  • Qualifications - Degree standard - Bachelor of Engineering or Science degree with modules in computer science
  • Background in agile development process with a desire to move to full devops
  • Quality focused - You know what it takes to deliver quality, sustainable systems, and you can teach others to do the same
  • You are passionate about high-quality software development and the technology and knowledge that supports it
  • Experience supporting digital technologies Content Management Systems, eCommerce, Content Delivery Networks, Web scale systems and technology solutions
  • Proven leadership skills and experience in managing digital development teams
  • Proven experience of managing third parties through significant organisational, structural and technology change
  • Previous development experience building on the cloud serverless technology stack along with hands on use of the AWS or GCP APIs would be highly advantageous
  • Fantastic stakeholder management skills. You will be an expert and managing expectations & influencing business leaders
  • Knowledge of agile principles, digital trends, tools and new ways of working
  • Focused on delivery, so an excellent knowledge of delivery processes is essential.
  • Able to use planning tools such as Jira to ensure commitments made to overall milestones can be justified by current status of sprints and feature backlog
  • Experiences with one or more of the technology platforms such as GraphQL, Kafka, Java, C++, .Net preferred
