Head of HSE / HSE Director - Policy, Risk & Assurance

Location: Flexible but with regular travel to our Head Office Locations

We’ve already got an industry leading reputation for Health and Safety and our colleagues live and breathe Health and Safety on a daily basis.  As part of our well documented strategy of striving to be the leading partner to the construction industry, Health and Safety alongside our customer commitment is at the very top of our Group wide agenda, making this a highly sought after opportunity.

As we continue to innovate, we need someone who considers themselves on top of their Health and Safety game, who is looking for a move that will support and develop their growth trajectory.

This is a fabulous opportunity and challenge presented in a very agile and autonomous culture where, working for the Group HSE & Fleet Director, you will be the Group’s technical safety expert working across all Business Units - Merchanting, Retail and Manufacturing both in the UK and Europe - advising and developing policy and standards as well as owning the assurance framework for ensuring the Group is operating within the parameters set.

We’re not big on listing responsibilities, because no day is ever the same and your potential at Travis Perkins is down to you. What we can do is provide you with a few insights as to what the challenge looks like.

Working as a key member of the Group’s HSE & Fleet Senior Leadership Team, here is what we see you needing to do in the first 12 months:-

  • Put your own stamp on the evolving safety centre of expertise.

  • Work with our data scientists to understand if we can develop a real time safety risk predictor tool.

  • Help the BU Safety Leads accelerate the delivery of their safety plans.

  • Develop and evolve the Group's Health and Safety Risk Register.

  • Supporting Toolstation France and Benelux align with the Group wide Health and Safety Strategy.

In the first few months we perceive these will be the challenges and opportunities:-

  • Understand the business, the sector and how it all works, don’t underestimate the size of our Group, it's wide and varied. However, everyone will go out of their way to help you!

  • Strengthen the Group's Safety Management System.

  • Programme manage the overhaul of the Incident Reporting System with our software partner.

Who will you be?

You personally, who will you be? Well, If you're hungry to develop and grow, not afraid of ambiguity and most of all you’ve got a sense of humour (arguably the most important) you’ll fit in pretty well.

To succeed across the Group, you’ll need to be great with people, whether this is relationship building or influencing, we’re a relationship, pick up the phone type of business. Or Google Chat, everyone loves Google chat!

It goes without saying, you’ll need to have experience of developing policy that is both technically ‘on the money’ and practical which works across a broad spectrum of business operations. You will also need a strong background in safety governance and assurance as well as being well informed on the macro factors that are affecting safety performance at any given time.

We don’t want people who have previously just “worked within” these environments, we need people who have made significant improvements and the evidence of doing so. This role is integral to our Group wide strategy, you’ll be a game changer.

We’re driving to become a truly inclusive employer. We want everyone to be at their best and it’s our ambition that everyone within our Group feels safe, welcome and confident to be their authentic selves.

You be you, it makes us, us.

To keep our business and customers safe, if you are successful in the role you will be made a conditional offer subject to additional background checks including criminal record, adverse financial, media search, directors search, occupational history, professional membership/qualification.
